  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Not in Sunday's lineup

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers.

McCarthy went 2-for-13 while starting the previous four games but will take a seat Sunday against Detroit right-hander Matt Manning. Pavin Smith will start in right field and bat sixth.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Receiving breather Sunday

Moreno is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers.

Moreno started the previous three games and will head to the bench after he went 1-for-8 with two walks and three strikeouts during that stretch. Tucker Barnhart will step in behind the plate to catch for lefty Jordan Montgomery.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Receiving rare day off

Suarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Tigers.

Suarez is batting .148 with a .457 OPS through 15 games in May and will hit the bench Sunday for just the second time this season. Blaze Alexander will man the hot corner and hit seventh in the series finale versus Detroit.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Extends hitting streak to 17 games

Marte went 1-for-4 with an RBI triple and a run scored in Saturday's loss to the Tigers.

Marte went down on strikes in each of his first two at-bats before driving in the first run of the game with a one-out triple in the bottom of the sixth. He would come home to score as well on a Joc Pederson single in the following at-bat, though the effort would fall short as Detroit stormed back in the seventh to take the lead. The triple was Marte's second of the season and extended his hitting streak to 17 games. However, he's recorded only one multi-hit game over that stretch and is batting just .246 in May with four homers, 10 RBI and seven runs scored.

  • Diamondbacks' Justin Martinez: Excels in low-leverage role

Martinez allowed one hit and one walk over a scoreless third of an inning in Saturday's 8-3 loss to Detroit.

Martinez has been effective in a low-leverage role out of the bullpen, allowing just one run with 16 strikeouts over 13 innings (0.69 ERA). He's managed to work around 10 walks, which is something that could turn against him at some point, but the right-hander's splitter (46.9 whiff percentage) and slider (50 percent) have been untouchable.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Two more weeks for return

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Saturday that Perdomo (knee) should return from the injured list in a couple of weeks, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Perdomo took grounders and batting practice at Chase Field on Saturday in what looked like a typical pre-game routine. That prompted Lovullo to echo the two-week time frame estimated by the injured shortstop last Wednesday. Perdomo, who is working his way back from a right meniscus tear, has not yet run at full speed nor performed quick adjustments or turns.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Removed from throwing program

Castro (shoulder) has been pulled back from his throwing program, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

It's unclear exactly when Castro was taken off the program, but he's "been shut down for a couple of days," per Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo. The right-hander had been cruising through the regimen, throwing out to 90, 110 and 120 feet when he felt discomfort on the top of the shoulder. Lovullo said Castro just needs a bit more rest and a second opinion is not needed at this time.

  • Diamondbacks' Alek Thomas: Takes at-bats Friday

Thomas (hamstring) took five at-bats at the Diamondbacks' training facility Friday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

This was Thomas' first activity of any kind after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection Monday. The outfielder was on a path to be activated; however, Thomas suffered a setback in the days leading up to a potential activation. The next step is for Thomas to be cleared for full baseball activity.

  • Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Hamstring tightened during start

Gallen revealed after Saturday's start against the Tigers that his right hamstring tightened up on him during the fourth inning, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

It's the same hamstring that he had issues with earlier this season, which resulted in an early removal from one start and having another pushed back. Gallen wound up pitching into the seventh inning Saturday, ultimately getting charged with three runs on seven hits while striking out 10 over 6.2 frames. The right-hander said after the outing that his hamstring feels fine and he's unconcerned. Still, given that it's been a recurring problem, it's something to keep in mind.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Getting breather Saturday

Gurriel isn't in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Saturday's game versus Detroit.

Gurriel has gone just 1-for-18 with nine strikeouts across his past five games, so the D-backs will give him a day to regroup Saturday. Jake McCarthy, Corbin Carroll and Pavin Smith will start across the outfield while Gurriel rests.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Struggles again Friday

Nelson (2-3) allowed eight runs on 11 hits and a walk while striking out four over four-plus innings to take the loss versus the Tigers on Friday.

Nelson avoided giving up a home run for the first time in three outings since he returned from an elbow injury, but that was the only silver lining on a dark cloud in this start. He allowed five runs over the first four innings and then failed to get an out in the fifth as the Tigers piled on the offense. This was Nelson's worst start of the season, but he's generally struggled with a 7.06 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 23:7 K:BB over 29.1 innings through seven appearances. He's tentatively projected for a difficult road start versus the Dodgers in his next outing.

  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: Extends throwing distance

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Friday that Rodriguez (shoulder) has extended his throwing program out to 60 feet, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Rodriguez resumed his program last week after being shut down in early April due to discomfort in a bullpen session. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on April 17, which makes the left-hander eligible to return in mid-June.

  • Diamondbacks' Joc Pederson: Scratched Friday

Pederson was scratched from Arizona's lineup ahead of Friday's game versus the Tigers.

Manager Torey Lovullo emphasized that Pederson is not injured -- the skipper simply wanted to use him off the bench during Friday's contest, per Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com. While Pederson sits, Randal Grichuk will serve as Arizona's DH, and Jake McCarthy will fill the opening in right field.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Idle against southpaw

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Tigers.

The lefty-hitting McCarthy will give way to Randal Grichuk in right field Friday as Detroit trots out the left-handed Tarik Skubal. McCarthy is 2-for-15 (.133) at the plate since May 5.
